Oliver is…

He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man

…done with the Golden Triangle

If you thought Chiang Rai was boring wait ’til you hear about the Golden Triangle.

When you next have a spare few days to kill, don’t go all the way to this place. Everyone talks about it, mostly like it’s something special, but it’s really not.

The main attraction is a spot on the bank where two rivers meet — the Mekong and the Ruak. These rivers act as boundaries so from one spot you can see three countries: in the picture below you can see Thailand in the foreground, Laos on the right (“east”) and Myanmar (“Burma”) on the left (“west”).

It’s nice, right, but you’ve seen it now; that’s how long it takes. It’s a cool thing to witness and I’m glad I saw it, but I had three nights booked here and there’s not a lot else to do or see here. There’s an opium museum or two, because they love growing that stuff up here, but otherwise it’s a very quiet, desolate place.

Still, the rivers and the neighbouring countries provided a nice backdrop for lunches and while I considered getting a visa for Myanmar and popping over for lunch, in the end I decided that was stupid and stayed put to eat bananas.

After that I went along to Chiang Khong, which was even quieter, but it’s a crossing point to get into Laos so that’s why I went. The ace bakery isn’t worth a post in itself.
